Discover Alhama

Five doors into the village: its history, its food, its corners, its festivals and its land. An honest summary, written from here, so you can choose where to begin.

Alhama de Almería 518 m

A small village
with plenty inside

Alhama is quick to describe and slow to discover. We are a village of close to 4,000 neighbours on the slope of the Andarax valley, with hot water beneath the streets, a President of the Republic in our memory and a festive calendar that never rests. This page sums it all up in five scenes; each one opens the door to a full section of the site.

Would you rather be taken by the hand? Our experience itineraries offer ready-made routes — through the village, the valley and the province — that combine these very same ingredients.

A history that springs up

It all began with water: the Romans built the first baths at the foot of Cerro Milano, the Arabs moved them 300 metres and left us the name — al-ḥamma, "the bath, the hot thermal spring" — and in 1877 the village opened its spa. In between, a son of Alhama, Nicolás Salmerón, came to preside over the First Republic and resigned rather than sign death sentences. That is the short version; the long one deserves its own page.

Eat like a local

In Alhama you eat the way you live: unhurried. Square-side bars where a tapa comes with your drink — that Almería custom that turns an aperitif into a meal —, valley cooking and local produce in the pantry. The best table is the one you share after a stroll through the white streets.

What to see and do

You can walk the village in a morning, but every corner has its story: the San Nicolás spa, where the water has come out hot for centuries; the waterside walk at Las Canales; the viewpoints leaning over the Andarax valley; and, a short hop away, the prehistoric site of Los Millares. Choose your first stop.

A year of festivals

December is the big month: from the 5th to the 8th, San Nicolás and the Purísima fill the streets with processions, verbenas and fireworks. In January, the San Antón bonfires light up the district. And in between, a whole calendar of dates in the village and the province, gathered day by day on our festivals page.

The terroir of the Andarax

This hillside has fed its people for centuries: vine trellises, olive trees and terraced gardens between the village and the river. From that land come the products that define us, to take home — or to taste without leaving the square. We introduce them one by one.

Frequently asked questions

Before you begin

How long do you need to discover Alhama?

The heart of the village fits into an unhurried morning: squares, white streets, the Salmerón park and the spa. With one night — ideally at the spa hotel or in one of the municipality's lodgings — you can add Las Canales, the viewpoints and a good meal.

How is this page different from "Experiences"?

This page sums up the village by theme — history, food, sights, festivals, terroir — and leads you to the sections that develop them. "Experiences" offers concrete, step-by-step itineraries through Alhama and its surroundings. They are sisters: one for orientation, the other for walking.

What is the best first stop if I only have an hour?

The Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the streets around it, with a stop at the Nicolás Salmerón park to greet the president's bust. If you have a moment left, walk over to the San Nicolás spa: it has been the heart of the village since 1877.

Where do I find the practical information?

Each linked section carries its own. For the essentials — getting here, town hall, the Friday market, where to sleep — the "Visit Alhama" page gathers the verified contact details.
