Balance through minerals

The Balneario de San Nicolás draws on a spring that rises at the foot of the Cerro Milano, on a natural terrace, with the village behind it and the Sierra de Gádor in front. The water emerges at around 46°C, sulphated, calcic and magnesic, with traces of bicarbonates and iron.

This composition makes it especially helpful for rheumatism and joint pain, the respiratory tract and digestive problems. Its waters have been declared of public utility since 1928.

The Roman Legacy

Antiquity

The first baths were built in Roman times, right beside the spring at the foot of the Cerro Milano. From those centuries remain traces and pieces such as the Dama de Alhama, a marble sculpture found in 1984 that reminds us just how much these waters were already valued back then.

The Breath of Al-Hamma

Al-Andalus

The very name of Alhama comes from the Arabic al-hamma (the baths or the hot water). It was the Arabs who moved the baths some 300 metres to their present site. The geographer Al-Idrisi mentioned the place in the 12th century, when bathing was at once hygiene, medicine and social life.

The Modern Spa

Revival

The Balneario de San Nicolás began operating in 1877, on a ground floor that had existed since 1772. In 1928 its waters were declared of public utility, and throughout the 20th century the building was renovated and extended into the spa and hotel you can visit today.
