Almería gives itself over to its patron saint
Every year, in late August, Almería celebrates its Feria in honour of the Virgen del Mar, patron saint of the city. They are nine days that begin two Fridays before the last Sunday of the month: in 2026, from 21 to 29 August. For many families in the region, Alhama included, it is the great event of the summer.
The devotion goes back a long way. The carving of the Virgin appeared on Torregarcía beach in 1502, and the fair as such took shape in 1806, when King Carlos IV was asked for permission to hold an agricultural and livestock fair in her honour. From those country markets to the festival of today there is a long road, but the patron saint remains at the heart of it all.
The city splits into two rhythms: the historic centre at midday and the fairground by night, beside the Andarax river. Flamenco dresses, horses and the scent of jasmine complete the picture.
The Batalla de las Flores
Floats, music and around 20,000 carnations —10,000 red and 10,000 white— that fly over the crowd in one of the most eagerly awaited parades.

At midday the party is lived in the centre, above all on the Paseo de Almería: tapas, drinks and a lively buzz among the street stalls until mid-afternoon.

By night the fairground of the Vega de Acá, beside the Andarax, fills with casetas, rides and dancing until dawn.
