Los Muertos

← Beaches
82 km from Alhama

In Carboneras, in the north of the park. Made of pale pebbles and gravel, which gives the water that transparent turquoise blue. One of the most famous unspoilt beaches in the province.

Los Muertos beach opens at the foot of a cliff in the municipality of Carboneras, at the northern tip of the Natural Park. It is not fine sand but rolled pebbles and whitish gravel: that pale bed is what gives the sea its clean, transparent turquoise blue. It is considered one of the most beautiful unspoilt beaches in Spain.

You reach it by leaving the car in a car park beside the AL-5106 road and walking down a trail of about 800 m, steep and with stretches of loose rock. The name recalls the bodies of shipwreck victims that the currents historically washed up on this shore — the same currents that still make it dangerous for swimming today.

Highlights

  1. Very transparent turquoise water over a gravel bed
  2. Completely unspoilt setting, with no buildings
  3. One of the most photographed beaches in Almería
  4. Cliffs and a viewpoint over the bay

Good to know

  • Beware of the currents: the waves break hard and make it difficult to get out of the water; respect the sea-condition flag at the car park
  • Don't swim in a strong easterly wind
  • No facilities or shade: bring water, a cap and sun protection
  • Comfortable footwear for the descent and the pebbles; arrive early, the car park fills up
