From the set to the spring
At the foot of the Sierra Alhamilla, in the municipality of Pechina, survives El Chorrillo de Pechina, an old abandoned mining hamlet of mud-brick houses. In 2014, Ridley Scott built a set there for Exodus: Gods and Kings. Two years later, the production of Game of Thrones reused and reworked that set to bring Vaes Dothrak to life, the only city of the Dothraki Sea, where Daenerys Targaryen is held captive in the sixth season.
Not far away, in the gorges of the Tabernas Desert — the Rambla del Cautivo and the Rambla del Búho — the long Dothraki march of episode 4 of that season was filmed, with a hundred horses and hundreds of extras. The Alcazaba of Almería itself also served as a set. Dust, mud and bare horizons: the same landscape that has captivated directors for decades.
