Alhama de Almería
Eastern gateway to the Alpujarra
Administrative seat of the comarca and eastern gateway to the Almería Alpujarra, Alhama rests on the foothills of the Sierra de Gádor, above the Andarax valley. It is the most populated of the 22 municipalities, known for its spa tradition, grape trellises and the Dama de Alhama, unearthed in 1984.

Story and present
Alhama is the administrative seat of the Alpujarra Almeriense, the comarca created by the Junta de Andalucía in 2003, and holds nearly a quarter of its population. The village was long thought to be of purely Muslim origin, until Roman remains surfaced in 1984 — among them the Dama de Alhama, a marble statue that pushed those origins much further back in time. Between its spa tradition and its grape trellises, this is where you enter the comarca coming from Almería: its eastern gateway.
