From Alhama inland, the Almería side of the Alpujarra strings together white villages among sierras, fertile plains and vine trellises. There are 22 — the official municipalities, not one more — and each has its own entry here.

The order is not alphabetical: it follows the road. You start at Alhama de Almería, the eastern gateway, and work your way up the Andarax valley stage by stage.

Alhama de Almería
Eastern gateway to the AlpujarraAdministrative seat of the comarca and eastern gateway to the Almería Alpujarra, Alhama rests on the foothills of the Sierra de Gádor, above the Andarax valley. It is the most populated of the 22 municipalities, known for its spa tradition, grape trellises and the Dama de Alhama, unearthed in 1984.
