San Pedro

70 km from Alhama

A cove with no road, reached only on foot or by boat from Las Negras. Turquoise water, a ruined watchtower and a small community that lives there all year round.

Cala de San Pedro is one of the most unusual corners of Cabo de Gata: an inlet with no road access, hemmed in between mountains and sea. Watching over it are the ruins of San Pedro castle, with a 16th-century watchtower built to protect the cove and its spring from Barbary pirate raids.

It is one of the few coves on the coast with a natural freshwater spring and vegetation, which has allowed a small, alternative community to settle there for much of the year. It is reached only by walking around 3 km from Las Negras (close to an hour along a coastal trail) or by water taxi, a 10-15 minute trip.
