Kiosco Amalia

20 km from Alhama

Kiosco Amalia is the historic home of the Almería americano: a hot, coffee-free drink made with milk, sugar, lemon peel, kola-nut liqueur or cream and cinnamon. The liqueur gives it its pale-pink colour, and it is served in a small clear glass. A cold summer version is also available.

Founded in 1889, Kiosco Amalia occupies a corner of Plaza Manuel Pérez García beside Puerta de Purchena. Its speciality is the Almería americano: sugar and lemon peel are combined with hot milk and kola-nut liqueur or cream before a final dusting of cinnamon. It contains no coffee; the liqueur gives it its pale-pink colour, and it is served in a small clear glass.

A summer version with ice cream is also available for warmer months. The kiosk has outdoor seating and wheelchair access. It opens in the morning from Tuesday to Friday and from 10:00 on Saturday, remaining closed on Monday and Sunday. Payment is still cash only.
