Where it comes from
Sweden
The caracola is named for the obvious: the spiral shape you get by rolling a strip of yeast dough onto itself. Inside go cinnamon, raisins and sugar, usually with a thin glaze on top.
According to pastry glossaries it is Swedish in origin and very popular in northern Europe and the Americas before settling into Spanish display cases. The chocolate variant has gained ground in recent years, especially among children who pick the raisins out.
This is everyday pastry: you will find it in the bakeries of Alhama and the whole province, next to the napolitana and the palmera.
