Roquetas de Mar's aquarium follows the water cycle from the Amazon to a one-million-litre ocean tank where bull sharks swim: two million litres in all, plus experiences like the shark cage dive.
The Aquarium Costa de Almería, on the Roquetas de Mar seafront, offers a themed route that follows the water cycle: from the tropical rivers of the Amazon to coral reefs, the great oceans and, to finish, the Mediterranean seabed with its posidonia meadows. In all, some two million litres of water across around ten large tanks.
The showpiece is the one-million-litre ocean tank, viewed through a huge panoramic window, home to bull sharks nearly three metres long, grey and nurse sharks, guitarfish, rays and large groupers. The visit is rounded out by the 'toca-toca' touch pools, the ray tank and the koi pond that children can help feed.
For the bold, the aquarium offers an experience unique in the province: a shark cage dive, open to non-divers from age 8 (with snorkel or hookah air supply), with about 30 minutes in the water face to face with the sharks. It also hosts birthdays, corporate events and a broad schools programme, and is a member of AIZA (Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquaria).
A self-guided visit takes 1 h to 1 h 30. The site is accessible and about a 40-minute drive from Alhama de Almería, with Roquetas beach next door to round off the day.
