Freshly fried porras and loop churros, buñuelos and pestiños to take away, at a family churro shop in Campohermoso with twenty-five years in the trade.
On Calle Cedro in Campohermoso, the Hernández Puertas family has been lighting the fryer before the village wakes for twenty-five years. Churros come two ways here: the porra, thick and fluffy, or the loop churro, thin and crisp, and both cry out for a cup of thick hot chocolate.
The counter goes beyond churros: buñuelos, traditional roscos, pestiños and tortas de chicharrones, the kind of country snack that is getting rare. Everything is sold to take away, so the usual thing is to leave with a warm paper cone bound for home or the square.
One simple tip: come early, when the dough is coming out non-stop and still warm. And if you do not feel like moving at the weekend, they deliver.
