The olive-oil rosquillas Juan Cruz delivered by bicycle in 1943 still leave Rioja every day, now also coated in chocolate.
Productos Pichote started in 1943 in a bakehouse in Rioja, in the Bajo Andarax, with a Moorish oven and bicycle deliveries. Juan Cruz registered the brand in the late sixties; José Cruz Artero runs it today, and more than 400 kilos of rosquillas, roscos and bars leave the factory daily. It belongs to the provincial Sabores Almería brand.
The virgin olive-oil rosquilla is the original: dry, crunchy, made for dunking in coffee or a glass of milk. There is a wholemeal version and one coated in dark or white chocolate, plus almond mantecados with lemon or cinnamon and seed bars. With the calendar come the roscos: aniseed, orange, and fried roscos at Christmas and Easter.
You will find them in shops and bars across half the province and on the Sabores Almería sales platform, which delivers to your door. To buy at the factory itself, call before you go.
