The Cabo de Gata salt pans are one of the strategic points on the bird migration route between Europe and Africa. The birds do not simply pass through: they rest here for days, and that is what makes them watchable.
Along the pans there are several public hides, with wooden walls and horizontal slits for watching without being seen. They cost nothing, need no booking and require no kit beyond patience — binoculars help, but the flamingos can be seen without them.
The visit pairs naturally with the Las Amoladeras visitor centre, whose panels explain why the salt pans matter so much to these birds.
