The city’s big playground, on Avenida del Mediterráneo: four themed zones that tell children about Almería — the Alcazaba, Cabo de Gata, cinema and recycling — inside a fenced, patrolled enclosure.
The Parque de las Familias occupies some 41,000 m² on Avenida del Mediterráneo — greenhouses until the city decided, in 2014, to turn them into the capital’s largest play space. It used to be called Ciudad de los Niños.
What sets it apart from any other park in the province is that it tells children about Almería. Its four themed zones are not scenery: the Alcazaba is an artificial hill with four big slides running off it; the Natural Park has a lighthouse you come down by sliding and a ship-shaped structure; Almería, land of cinema combines a climbing wall with a play area shaped like a film reel; and the recycling zone, for the youngest, gathers a sandpit, low slides and a jumping mat.
It is a fenced enclosure with four gates, with toilets in the south-east corner — beside the Alcazaba — and play areas adapted for children with disabilities. Opening hours have changed several times since it opened and sources disagree: check with the city council before heading over late in the day.
