Where it comes from
Almería city · also Adra and Albox
Some sweets need no history to earn their place on the counter. The media luna is one: a sponge base cut into a crescent and covered with meringue, usually passed through the oven until golden. It goes with the breakfast coffee or a mid-afternoon break, and is eaten by hand.
It is a classic of Almería's confiterías and one of the specialities of Confiterías Hernández, whose workshop covers 9,000 m²; in 2014 the Confitería Capri put it forward as one of four sweets with a fully Almerian identity. Nobody knows for certain who came up with it or when: its story is simply always having been there.
To find one, just step into Capri, Hernández or La Guinda in El Zapillo; outside the capital, the Confitería San Isidro in Adra, open since 1959, and the Pastelería Ángel in Albox. One for now and one for the road.
