The Cooperativa Agrícola San Isidro, historically the largest tomato cooperative in the world. Born in 1944, when growers from Almería's vegas decided to sell without middlemen.
The story of CASI begins in 1944 with a few dozen farmers from the vegas around Almería, determined to sell their produce — mostly potatoes at the time — directly at the city market, in premises of about fifty square metres.
Over the decades the cooperative specialised in tomatoes until it became, historically, the largest tomato cooperative in the world. Today it gathers some 1,700 farmers producing in the order of 200,000 tonnes a year, across the full range of varieties — from salad tomatoes to Raf.
